When a Dumpster Makes Sense During a Move or Downsize
Moving is already one of the more demanding tasks a household takes on. Add in the need to sort through years of accumulated belongings - deciding what to donate, what to sell, and what to simply get rid of - and the logistics can pile up fast. A dumpster rental gives you a single place to put everything that isn't making the trip, rather than coordinating multiple junk hauler pickups or filling up your vehicle with load after load to the transfer station.
The same logic applies to downsizing projects. Whether you're moving from a larger home to a smaller one, transitioning to a retirement community, or helping a parent clear out a long-time family residence, the volume of furniture and household goods that won't fit the next chapter is often larger than expected. Having a dumpster on-site for a few days removes the pressure of working around haul-away windows and lets you sort at your own pace.
Estate cleanouts follow a similar pattern. These projects often involve sentimental decisions that slow the process down - and that's completely understandable. A rental period that gives you three full days means you're not rushing through decisions to meet a hauler's schedule.
Common scenarios where a rental makes sense:
- Clearing out furniture and household goods before a long-distance or local move
- Downsizing from a larger home - reducing square footage means reducing possessions
- Cleaning out a parent's or family member's home after they've moved to assisted living or passed away
- Preparing a rental property or inherited home for sale or new tenants
- Purging a garage, storage unit, or outbuilding that's been accumulating for years
What Can Go in the Dumpster
Most of the materials generated during a move or downsize are straightforward - furniture, boxes, old clothing, broken household items, general household goods that have reached the end of their useful life. The majority of this is fine to put in the dumpster.
Accepted items typically include:
- Sofas, chairs, and upholstered furniture
- Tables, dressers, shelving, and wooden furniture
- Cardboard boxes and packing materials
- Clothing, linens, and textiles that aren't donation-worthy
- Small lamps, decor, mirrors, and non-hazardous household goods
- Bagged general household debris (not regular trash mixed in - see below)
- Mattresses and box springs (with applicable fees - see mattress section below)
- Carpet, rugs, and flooring materials
- Yard items, garden tools, and outdoor furniture

What to Do With Appliances and Electronics
This is where moving and downsizing projects get a little more specific. Large appliances and electronics require some extra planning - they don't go in the dumpster the same way furniture does.
Large appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, ovens, dishwashers, HVAC units) are accepted with special handling - place them beside the dumpster, not inside it. A $25-each fee applies. These items must be set on the ground next to the trailer so our driver can process them separately.
Electronics (televisions, computers, monitors, printers, and similar items) carry a $10 per item fee and must be placed beside the dumpster, not inside it. This allows them to be handled separately for proper e-waste disposal.
Box springs do not carry an additional fee - only mattresses do (see below).
If you're moving out of a home and leaving behind a refrigerator, washer, dryer, or stove that isn't going with you, plan ahead. These items must be set beside the dumpster - not loaded inside it. Reach out to us before your delivery date so we can confirm the fee and make sure we handle them separately on pickup day.
The Mattress Fee Explained
Mattresses require specialized processing at the disposal facility - which is why they carry an additional fee. The charge is $10 per mattress in Aiken County and $25 per mattress outside Aiken County. This fee applies to mattresses only.
A few things worth noting:
- Box springs are not charged separately - the mattress fee covers the set. You can put a box spring in the dumpster at no additional charge.
- Mattresses can go inside the dumpster - you don't need to set them beside it the way you do with electronics.
- If you're clearing out a multi-bedroom home, add up the mattresses early and factor the fees into your budget. A four-bedroom house clearing could easily have four to six mattresses.
What Cannot Go in the Dumpster
Moving projects produce a wide variety of materials, and most are fine - but a few categories are prohibited regardless of what's being cleared out.
- Liquids of any kind - paint cans with liquid paint, cleaning chemicals, motor oil, or any other liquid containers. Paint cans and similar containers are only accepted if completely emptied, crushed flat, and incapable of holding liquid - "dried out" or "empty" alone does not qualify. Call (803) 679-8899 if unsure.
- Lithium-ion and household batteries - power tools, e-bikes, laptops, phones, and similar batteries. Auto/marine batteries are accepted beside the dumpster at no fee.
- Pressurized containers other than propane cylinders - oxygen cylinders, aerosol canisters with pressure remaining. Propane cylinders (grill tanks, camping cylinders) are accepted beside the dumpster at no fee.
- Hazardous materials - pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, solvents, aerosol cans, and similar items cannot go in.
- Household garbage, household trash, and municipal solid waste (MSW) - regular bagged household waste of any kind is never accepted. Keep regular garbage separate and put it in your normal household bins.
See the full Prohibited Items list for complete details.
Most of these items don't come up often during a typical move, but they can surface during estate cleanouts where garages, sheds, and utility areas haven't been cleared in years. A bottle of old herbicide in the back of a shed, a car battery on a garage shelf - these need to be sorted out before they end up in the dumpster.
Choosing the Right Size for Your Cleanout
We offer three sizes, and the right choice depends on how much you're clearing and what kind of space you're dealing with. Here's a general breakdown for moving and downsizing projects:
| Size | Dimensions | Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 yd | 12×7×4 ft | $285 | One room of furniture removal |
| 15 yd | 14×7×4 ft | $345 | Two rooms of furniture removal |
| 17 yd | 16×7×4 ft | $375 | Multiple rooms of furniture removal, or full apartment or mobile-home cleanout |
All three sizes include a 3-day rental period and one dump. Additional days run $25 per day. Extra weight beyond the included tonnage is $50 per ton.
If you're not sure what size fits your project, the Size Guide can help you work through the options. And if you're on the fence between two sizes, it's generally worth going up - the price difference between the 12 and 15 is $60, and running out of space mid-project is more disruptive than paying for a slightly larger container up front.
Furniture is bulky but not particularly heavy, so most moving and downsizing loads stay well within the weight limits. The exception is if you're also clearing out dense debris like concrete, tile, or large amounts of construction material - but that's less common in these situations.
Timing and Rental Duration for Moves and Downsizes
The standard rental is three days, which works well for most projects. That said, the pacing of a move or estate cleanout is often different from a renovation job - decisions take longer, and it's not always a straight shot from start to finish.
A few things to think about when scheduling your rental:
- Coordinate with your move-out or closing date. If you're leaving the property on a specific day, book the dumpster to be picked up the day before or same day so you're not paying for extra days you don't need. Plan for delivery a few days before your end date to give yourself working time.
- Estate cleanouts often benefit from extra days. When sorting through a household involves family members coming and going, or sentimental decisions that take time, a $25/day extension is a reasonable expense for the flexibility it buys.
- Avoid starting a cleanout on a Friday if possible. Swaps and returns are available on weekdays between 7am and 5pm. If you fill the dumpster and need it swapped out, that works much easier mid-week.
If your project runs long or you realize you need more capacity, a swap is available at the base rate minus 10% on weekdays. Call us and we'll work out the logistics.
Driveway and Property Placement During an Active Move
Moves and downsizing projects often happen at occupied residential properties - which means driveway condition and property access matter more than they would on an empty lot or commercial site.
Our equipment is designed to minimize the risk of driveway damage. The rubber-wheeled trailer and careful placement approach reduces the risks associated with traditional heavy roll-off containers. Beyond the container itself, the delivery vehicle matters too - traditional roll-off trucks are very heavy, and when retrieving a loaded conventional dumpster the truck must also bear the full weight of the loaded container, placing substantial stress on your driveway and the ground near the edge of it. Aiken Dumpster Rentals uses a truck to tow the trailer rather than a traditional roll-off truck that must load and support the container during pickup, which helps reduce that stress. That said, no placement is completely without risk, and we'll work with you to identify a good spot based on your specific driveway layout and access needs.
A few practical notes for placement during a move:
- Make sure there's clear access for the delivery truck on the day of drop-off and again on pickup day. Moving vehicles and extra cars on the property can complicate positioning.
- If your moving truck needs driveway access at the same time as the dumpster, plan the positioning so both can operate without blocking each other.
- Street placement may be an option in some cases - check with your local municipality about permit requirements if you're considering placing the dumpster at the curb rather than in the driveway.
