When in Doubt, Size Up
If you're on the fence between two sizes, go with the larger one. Here's why: overage charges are $50 per additional ton and $25 per additional day if you need more time. Ordering a second trailer because you undersized your rental will almost always cost more than simply sizing up from the start. As a rule of thumb, if you're torn between the 12 and 15, go with the 15. If you're torn between the 15 and 17, go with the 17. Better to have a little extra room than to run out of space mid-project and have to make a separate haul.
